As you all know Glen did and is doing a great job on crushing bugs in OG but some are so time consuming that we have decided to actively go to our fan club and ask for volenteers who can help Glen with the development. We all have our day jobs and private lives and thus spreading the workload on multiple shoulders to speed up the OG development is a good thing for the application. So, if you know PHP, Javascript and have (preferably) experience with Firefox add-ons please give us a helping hand!

OptimizeGoogle now verified and generally available

Today the folks at Mozilla officially verified our add-on and have removed the “experimental” tag. This means OG is now generally available to everybody!

Thanks to all the people who have and still report bugs and improvements. And of course the biggest credit goes to Glen who has taken on the OG project to keep this wonderful add-on alive. Well done and keep up the excellent work!

Bugtracker available

We’ve setup a public bugtracker and suggest that you report any bugs there. This is more convenient to track then the Google groups.

OptimizeGoogle is on Mozilla Add-On website

We put OG on the official Mozilla website. We will be primarily updating it there and using this site for news, etc.

PS: It has “experimental” status until Mozilla team have verified the release (which should not be long).

Glen just sent me the new releasable version of OG which has version number 0.77. We’re making progress and have also had the help offered by a seasoned programmer, hoping to accelerate the project.

But for now, download and enjoy!

Here you go, the first patched up release of the new OptimizeGoogle project (based on CustomizeGoogle). Note that this version also has all the changes made in 0.76.3 released a while back.

Bugfix: Now mostly works with new search result page. This is a stopgap solution, to be improved later.
Update: Compatibility with Firefox 3.7.*
Update: Links updated for alternate search sites.
Update: Set the following options to being active by default: remove click tracking, remove ads, anonymize Google cookie UID and don’t send cookies to Google Analytics.
Update: Multiple languages added.

Note: A known issue exists where the script runs on the current tab when another tab is (re)loaded. This will be fixed in a later version.

As I also really like the Firefox plugin “CustomizeGoogle” but have noticed there is no new release since October 2008, I decided to setup a Wordpress blog to provide a platform to keep the plugin alive. As Google makes changes the plugin needs to change as well.

What does CustomizeGoogle do? It provides the following three core functions:

Removes all ads on Google pages.
Allows to switch to HTTPS when accessing Google pages like Gmail, Google Docs, etc.
Protects your privacy: Removes click tracking and does not send tracking information (Google Analytics and Unique UID).

So I’ve collected the changes I could find on the internet and created a new version which you can download here. I am not a programmer by profession and as such I hope some people will volenteer to create a team to keep this plugin up to date and easily available.
